Exploring the Future of Insurance with the Singapore Actuarial Society

At a recent hackathon in Singapore with the Singapore Actuarial Society, 40 actuaries came together to explore how AI and analytics could reshape the future of insurance.

Working with claims data for a fictional insurer, participants were given the tools, guidance, and encouragement to investigate real-world insurance challenges. From there, the ideas and experimentation came from the actuaries themselves.

One group focused on reinsurance, identifying which parts of the business should be reinsured and the price at which reinsurance would make the book viable. Others analysed loss ratios, pricing performance, and areas where the portfolio was underperforming. Several teams built AI-powered control centres designed to surface operational and claims issues, including inconsistencies in policyholder communications and transcripts indicating claims that may fall outside product terms and conditions.

A key theme from the session was the difference in insurance distribution models between Europe and Asia. In markets such as Ireland and the UK, comparison sites often sit between insurers and customers. In much of Asia, that intermediary layer is far less established, with many customers not purchasing motor cover directly at all.

As AI agents increasingly begin to shop on behalf of customers, this difference could have significant implications. Without an entrenched comparison-site layer to displace, Asian insurers may face more direct and earlier disruption from AI-enabled distribution models.

The actuaries in the room were not only testing new tools; they were also exploring the strategic questions that will shape the next phase of insurance: how risk is priced, how portfolios are managed, how claims are controlled, and how insurers engage with customers in an AI-enabled market.
